Description

Ferdinands Apple Thyme Bitter combines traditional German roots (Apple) with a light French summer breeze (Thyme). It is a good companion for typical London Dry Gins. The dominant juniper flavor of these Gins harmonizes well with the herbal notes of thyme. The fruity apple notes stay pleasantly in the background. Our recommendation is to serve this Bitter with Leopolds or OMG Gin.

Do you know the historical origins of Bitters?

By the 19th century, the practice of adding herbal ingredients to wine as preventive medicines had become immensely popular. Of the commercial aromatic bitters that emerged from this period, the most popular is Angostura bitters (the bark of the Angostura tree is the main ingredient). It was first compounded in Venezuela in 1824 by German physician Dr. Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert. Angostura Bitters was used as a cure for sea sickness and stomach upsets and therefore primarily sold to sailors and the British Royal Navy. Of course the consumption wasn´t restricted to medicinal purposes... By the end of the 19th century, Bitters were firmly in place behind the bars all around the world. Unfortunately, as a result of the Prohibition, Bitters went into decline in the 20th century. Although they were never prohibited, as they were regarded as food additives and not drinking alcohol. Fortunately there is a resurgence in bitters these days. More and more bartenders use them to add depths of complexity and flavor to the final drink.
